Will Love Island contestants be under less pressure now Instagram has removed its likes? Applications for this year close on November 30th and in previous years how many likes on Instagram would influence if you were considered.
It probably comes as a relief to Sir Peter Bazalgette that Instagram likes have been removed. When he was chairman of Endemol, he adapted and brought Big Brother to the UK and opened the doors to reality TV. Whether or not he feels responsible for what happened to some of the more vulnerable house mates, is irrelevant, but he has said “There is a long list now of young people who have been persecuted in a way that would not have been possible until this century.” He hates cyber-bullying. In 2017 he wrote The Empathy Instinct which suggests that we are losing the ability to imagine what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes. If it’s true that companies are now starting to take care of vulnerable young people online, that’s great.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge got it right with the parody of Love Island on Saturday Night Live. The contestants that we really like on Love Island are the ones who don’t take themselves too seriously and I bet they have a good laugh at this sketch.
